Johann Wolf (pedagogue)

Johann Wolf (born May 26, 1765 in Nuremberg ; † February 16, 1824 there ) was a German educator and ornithologist , he was also a botanist. His author's abbreviation is Joh.Wolf .

Life

After attending school in Nuremberg, he studied at the school teachers' college in Meiningen from 1789 . For outstanding achievements, he received a scholarship for an educational trip through northern Germany. In Schnepfenthal he visited the pedagogue Christian Gotthilf Salzmann , who inspired and introduced him to the natural sciences.

Wolf he came as a private tutor to the Reich schultheiß Haller von Hallerstein and in 1792 took over a teaching position at the Büchnerische Lehr- und Bildungsanstalt in his hometown. In this position he published his first work: New methodological regulations for educational institutions and schools . He devoted himself particularly to ornithology and was soon considered one of the first ornithologists in Germany. His natural history of birds in Germany , which he began together with Bernhard Wagner in 1805, was recognized, as was his pocket book on ornithology for Germany . In 1801 Wolf founded the Natural History Society in Nuremberg . Since he had also acquired knowledge in the field of technology, he was appointed the first teacher at the newly established boys 'secondary school in 1803, and in the same year he was appointed inspector of the newly founded school teachers' college. He had been suffering from the lungs for a long time and when he had an inflammation of the intestine he died on February 16, 1824.

Honors

In 1796 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

Wolf contributed a lot to the spread of scientific knowledge through word and writing. Numerous scientific institutes have made him a member. In addition to various articles in Voigt's magazine of natural history , in the annals of the Wetterauische Gesellschaft , he published other articles. Wolf wrote some basic works as well as numerous articles in scientific publications.
