Johann Wilhelm Sturm (born July 6, 1808 in Nuremberg ; † January 6, 1865 there ) was a German botanist , ornithologist and copperplate engraver . Its botanical author abbreviation is " JWSturm ".

Live and act

Johann Wilhelm Sturm was the son of the naturalist and copper engraver Jacob Sturm and his wife Christine Albertine Wilhelmine (née Wagner, ⚭ 1794, † 1832). His brother was the artist and ornithologist Johann Heinrich Christian Friedrich Sturm (1805–1862). The other five siblings died early. He gained fame mainly for his writings on vascular cryptogams, and he also published a work on the fern flora of Chile. He was also involved in the publication of Martius'schen Flora brasiliensis , where he worked on some families of cryptogamous plants. After his father's death, he continued to publish his father's most important work, the series Germany's Flora in Pictures from Nature . In 1851 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . Sturm had a son Jakob Sturm, who became a general practitioner in Mögeldorf, and a daughter Marie Sturm, who worked as a flower and portrait painter and thus continued the family's artistic tradition.
