Fritz Traugott Schulz
Fritz Traugott Schulz (born August 6, 1875 in Dahlhausen ad Ruhr ; died May 31, 1951 in Nuremberg ) was a German art historian , museum director and chief curator at the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg.
Act
Schulz attended the Royal High School in Duisburg until 1894 , before he went to Halle , according to his parents' wishes , to study Protestant theology there. In the summer semester of 1895 he moved to the University of Göttingen and, in addition to theological lessons, also attended a proseminar and lectures with the Germanist Moritz Heyne , so that he turned to German studies. He also took part in the Germanic and Romance seminars. In addition to German studies, he now studied modern art history and library science . In 1899 he was with Moritz Heyne with the dissertation Typical of the great Heidelberg song manuscript and related manuscripts by word and image, a Germanistic-antiquarian study for Dr. phil. PhD . From 1898 to 1899 he was assistant in the painting and engraving collection at the University of Göttingen and after graduating he went to the Provincial Museum in Hanover as an intern , where from 1900 he was involved in the inventory of art monuments in the Province of Hanover. From 1901 he began to work as an assistant for the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg and in 1906 he became chief curator of the cultural and art history collections. In 1918 he received the title of professor. He was also a member of the Association for History and the Albrecht Dürer Association as well as the head of the architecture committee. In 1928 he organized events for the year of Dürer.
On August 1, 1928, he was appointed director of the Nuremberg Municipal Art Collection, after having been temporarily in charge of this office since 1910. As part of the takeover by the Nazis , he was arrested on 22 March 1933 removed from office after his release and to take early retirement. In the meantime he wrote articles for the general encyclopedia of fine artists from antiquity to the present . It was only after the end of the Second World War that he was again entrusted with the management of the municipal art collections from 1948 to 1950.
Between 1904 and 1914, Schulz had made an outstanding contribution to the inventory of the Nuremberg old town houses, which he recorded both photographically and in writing.
