The Basilica of St. Rosa of Lima ( Spanish Basílica Santa Rosa de Lima ) is a Roman Catholic church in Lima , the capital of Peru . The church of the Archdiocese of Lima is dedicated to Rosa von Lima and has the title of a minor basilica . The church is part of the Historic Downtown Lima UNESCO World Heritage Site. The complex consists of the basilica, the monastery and a garden with the fountain of wishes. In front of the church is the Santa Rosa Park.

Rosa of Lima

The church was built in 1728 as part of a sanctuary together with a monastery next to the house where Isabel Flores de Oliva was born, who is known under the name of Rosa von Lima, based on her religious name Rosa de Santa Maria. Born in 1586, she entered the monastery of Santo Domingo in 1606 as a Dominican tertiary. As a recluse, she led a strict penitential life in a garden shed in her parents' house. She earned her living with weaving and gardening work. A well was dug in the garden, today's Well of Wishes. She died on August 24, 1617 at the age of 31. Soon after her death, starting in Lima, she began to be venerated as saints in South America . She was canonized in 1671 by Pope Clement X as the first South American woman and declared the patron saint of all of America, the Philippines and the West Indies.

Building

On February 7, 1669, Andrés de Villela, Knight of the Order of Santiago , bought the house and the garden of Santa Rosa and donated them to the monastery to be converted into a chapel and a sanctuary. In 1728 the sanctuary was completed in the Rococo style on the site of the Hospital del Espíritu Santo . In 1874 the baroque portal and a third of the building to build Avenida Tacna were demolished. The Dominicans, who returned in 1911, built today's three-aisled basilica in a rotated orientation by 1923 . The choir , a false transept and part of the nave, which forms the transept of the new church, have been preserved. In 1993 Pope John Paul II elevated the church to a minor basilica.

The family home is decorated with souvenirs of the saint, her hermitage and the 15-meter-deep fountain in the garden, in which letters with wishes are thrown, are also shown.

A procession in honor of Lima's patron saint takes place annually on August 30th in front of the basilica.
