Rose of Lima , born Isabel Flores de Oliva (* 20th April 1586 in Lima , Viceroy of Peru ; † 24. August 1617 ibid) was a Peruvian virgin , mystic and Dominicans - Terziarin . She is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church . Her feast day is August 23.

Life

Rosa von Lima 's real name was Isabel Flores de Oliva. Her parents were Gaspar Flores and María de Oliva. Even as a child she had the desire to lead a consecrated life and in it St. To succeed Catherine of Siena . Therefore, at the age of twenty, she entered the Third Order of the Dominicans and took the religious name Rosa a Santa Maria . As a consecrated virgin and recluse , she lived from then on in a hut near her parents' house, where she led a life of penance . She earned her living with weaving and gardening work.

Rosa helped found the first contemplative monastery in South America , which could not be built until 1623, after her death.

Soon after her death, she began to be venerated as saints , first in Lima, later in Peru and finally throughout Latin America . In 1671 she was canonized by Pope Clement X and became America's first saint. The Basilica of St. Rosa of Lima was built near the house where she was born.

Her feast day is August 23 .

Rosa is the patroness of Lima, Peru, South America, the West Indies and the Philippines, as well as the gardener and florist. She is called in case of injuries, childbirth and family disputes as well as against rashes.
