Life
Martin von Porres was the son of the Spanish nobleman Juan de Porres and Anna Velasquez, a daughter of African slaves from Panama . He was raised religiously by his mother. Miraculous healings have also been reported.
In 1594 he entered the Dominican monastery in Lima as a lay brother . As a mulatto he was initially treated very badly and assigned to simple tasks. It was not until June 2, 1603 that he was accepted into the order as a profession . In the monastery he dedicated himself to nursing the sick and treated everyone regardless of their skin color. With the help of his sister, he founded an orphanage and numerous charitable institutions in Lima. He led a very ascetic life, hardly slept and was venerated as a saint by the population during his lifetime. In 1639 he died at the age of 60 from complications from typhoid fever .
