Art collection of the University of Göttingen
The art collection of the University of Göttingen at the Department of Art History of the University of Göttingen is a collection of paintings , graphics and sculptures . It is the oldest university art collection in Germany explicitly set up as a teaching collection.
History of the collection
The collection arose largely from two foundations in the 18th century: Johann Friedrich Armand von Uffenbach died in 1769 and bequeathed his collection of drawings and prints to the University of Göttingen. In 1796, more than 270 mostly Dutch paintings from the inheritance of Johann Wilhelm Zschorn came into the possession of the University of Göttingen. Since 1987 the paintings have been housed in the auditorium building on Weender Landstrasse, and the graphics in the Art History Seminar on Nikolausberger Weg.
On April 15, 2011, the collection was made accessible to the public again after renovation work that had lasted from the beginning of 2008. Due to the renovation work, the works were outsourced, but not completely withdrawn from the public: Every first Sunday of the month, a work from the collection was explained and discussed in more detail in the specially created lecture series Artwork of the Month . The reopened collection is presented on 5000 square meters in a permanent exhibition. In addition to the enlargement of the exhibition space and the use of colored partition walls, many works from the depot are shown that have never been made accessible to the public.
In addition to the in-house (permanent) exhibition, various exhibitions are organized and smaller projects and lectures are held.
A masterpiece by Jan Brueghel the Elder , stolen in 1973 , was bought back in 2019 after 46 years.
