The ethnological collection of the University of Göttingen (also the collection for ethnology ) at the Institute for Ethnology of the Georg-August University of Göttingen is an important ethnological institution in Germany . The state of Lower Saxony is responsible for this .

The naturalist Johann Friedrich Blumenbach introduced in the 18th century, the Cook - Forster collection and the collection of Baron von Asch to Göttingen. In 1926, Hans Hermann Plischke was commissioned to prepare the ethnological collection. In 1933 the "Seminar for Ethnology and Ethnographic Collection" was established.

The independent institute with museum opened for the first time in 1936, but has always remained closed to the public. The exhibition area is now around 300 m² on two floors, the collection contains around 17,000 exhibits . The permanent exhibition was reopened on February 6, 2000 and is open to visitors on Sundays.

The focus is on the South Seas with the Cook Forest Collection ( Hawaii , Tahiti , Tonga and New Zealand ) as well as Siberia and the polar region with the Baron von Asch collection .
