history

Count of Linden

In 1882, leading business representatives from the region founded the colonial societyWürttembergischer Verein für Handelsgeographie und Förderer Deutscher Austausch im Auslands e. V. “(later the Society for Geography and Ethnology zu Stuttgart eV) with the aim of promoting geography , economy and culture . The name of the museum goes back to the chairman of the association, Count Karl von Linden (1838–1910), who, however, could no longer experience the inauguration. In 1889 Linden converted the so-called Handelsgeographisches Museum in the Gewerbehalle into an ethnographic museum based on scientific principles. The last King of Wuerttemberg, Wilhelm II , made significant contributions to building up the collection .

The neoclassical building, which still exists today, was built according to the plans of the award winner and architect Georg Eser together with the Stuttgart architects Bihl & Woltz in 1911, after approx. 18 months of construction, completed and opened on May 28, 1911. At that time, the collections already numbered around 63,000 objects.

In 1973, the state of Baden-Württemberg and the city of Stuttgart took over the public sponsorship of the Linden Museum as the State Museum of Ethnology . Since then, the Society for Earth and Ethnology in Stuttgart e. V. as a support association of the Linden Museum to disseminate geological and ethnological knowledge.

Museum today

The Linden Museum shows cultural diversity, opens up cultural contexts and explains their social relevance. It deals with basic human issues such as society, identity, cultural change or beliefs. The museum sees itself as a place for intercultural learning and encounters with other cultures. Accompanying programs such as workshops, lectures, concerts, demonstrations from dance to ceremony, films, theme days, children's events and special tours complete the range of exhibitions. There are differentiated management programs for schools and kindergartens as well as adult education.

Number of visitors

In 2014 the Linden Museum had the largest increase in visitors of all Stuttgart museums, with 115,250 visitors (+ 11.20% compared to 2013), to which the special exhibition about the Inca contributed in particular.

Initiative for ethnological collections

The Linden Museum, as well as the Ethnological Museum am Rothenbaum - Cultures and Arts of the World (MARKK) in Hamburg, are redesigning their facilities. First, the Africa departments will be redesigned. The Federal Cultural Foundation is supporting this change from 2018 to 2022 with 1 million euros each. With this money should

  • new ways in cooperation with the countries of origin and in provenance research , as well as
  • new forms of museum presentation and opening up to local society

be developed.

Research projects

The museum is a partner in national and international research projects: "Difficult legacy - on the museological and scientific handling of colonial objects in ethnological museums" (2016-2018), EU project "SWICH - Sharing a World of Inclusion, Creativity and Heritage" (2014 –2018), “Human-thing entanglements in indigenous societies: intra- and transcultural processes of object-based knowledge exchange in the Guyanas” (2014–2017), “Khurasan - Land of the Sunrise” (2014–2017). The Linden Museum Stuttgart also conducts provenance research during the Nazi era (2016/17).
