The Mission House St. Augustin was founded for the purpose of temporary help in pastoral care and as a home for members of the order in need of relaxation and moved into in 1913.

During the First World War it was used as a reserve hospital, with members of the Order helping with the care of the wounded. After the end of the war, occupation soldiers took possession of the mission house in order to billet there. In September 1919 the last soldiers withdrew, so that the building was again left to the Steyler missionaries.

From September 1919 St. Augustin served as a novice house, in 1925 a seminary with a religious college followed, today's Cologne University of Catholic Theology (KHKT) - St. Augustin , which was officially recognized in 1983 and has been operated by the Archbishopric of Cologne since February 2020 .

The National Socialists confiscated the mission house in 1941 and expelled all residents. In the following war years, the building was hit by several aerial bombs and severely damaged. When the immediate area was conquered by American troops, on March 25, 1945 around 5,000 people from the surrounding villages of Menden , Mülldorf and Niederpleis were evacuated for 24 hours into the still standing rooms of the mission house. After the end of the war, the ruins served briefly as an interim storage facility for the return of French forced laborers. As early as 1945, the first residents of the Steyler house returned to St. Augustin and began repair work. In March 1947 the building was repaired with the exception of the church. In 1948 the church could also be occupied.

In 1946 the Steyler missionaries took in a Catholic retirement home in a wing of the mission house, the previous premises of which were partially destroyed in the war. In 1960 the home moved to its own new building a few hundred meters away - in today's CBT St. Monika old people's home - because the Steyler missionaries reported their own needs.

After the war, St. Augustine again served to train the next generation of the order. In 1946 nine deacons were ordained priests.

In 1962, the Steyler Ethnological Anthropos Institute moved from Froideville, Switzerland ( Posieux community , canton Friborg ) to St. Augustin. The Steyler Bank was founded in Sankt Augustin in 1964 and is based on the mission house area. The Sinological Institute Monumenta Serica moved from Los Angeles to the Sankt Augustin campus in 1972 . The Völkerkundemuseum Haus Völker und Kulturen was opened on the site in 1973, the China Center in 1988.

The almost ten meter high statue of Christ by the artist Fidelis Bentele was erected in spring 2009. She stands in front of the Missionsprokur building and overlooks the Hangelar Heath . The statue originally stood on the roof of the Prosper Hospital in Recklinghausen . When the building was replaced by a new building in the 1970s, the statue was placed in the hospital park, where it was stored until the Steyler missionaries expressed interest in the statue.

Museum House Peoples and Cultures

The House of Peoples and Cultures is an ethnological and scientific museum. Its largest collections come from sub-Saharan Africa and Papua New Guinea. There are also smaller collections from Japan, China, Indonesia and some countries in South America. Special emphasis is placed on objects that represent humans in their relationship to superhuman powers. For financial and personal reasons, the museum had to be closed to the public in 2005. However, it is open every first Sunday of the month and upon registration.

Anthropos Institute

The Anthropos Institute is an ethnological institute. The institute was founded in 1931 by Father Wilhelm Schmidt SVD in the St. Gabriel Mission House in Maria Enzersdorf . It has been located in St. Augustin since 1962. It oversees the publication of the ethnological and linguistic journal “Anthropos”, first published in 1906. In its scientific work and publications, the institute wants to research and present the interrelationships between different cultures. The magazine “Anthropos” appears twice a year with an average of 40 articles, 120 book reviews, an extensive magazine review and a list of new publications. The edition of 800 copies is sent to 60 countries. In addition to the journal “Anthropos”, the institute is responsible for the publication of the two series “Collectanea Instituti Anthropos” and “Studia Instituti Anthropos”.

University library

With the move of the Steyler Library from the Austrian St. Gabriel branch to St. Augustin in September 2010, one of the largest and most valuable theological specialist libraries in Germany was created with its holdings of 250,000 books. This is not only available to members of the order, but also to external parties.

Monastery festival

Since 2002, the St. Augustinian Monastery Festival has been held on the Missionshaus premises about every two years, a family festival with cabaret, theater, music and dance performances, exhibitions, information stands and activities. According to the organizers, it attracted around 13,000 visitors in 2006 and over 10,000 in 2008. In 2010 the organizers expected 15,000 visitors. The 6th monastery festival was celebrated in 2013 on the occasion of the centenary of the mission house in Sankt Augustin. The 7th monastery festival took place on June 11th and 12th, 2016.
