Fidelis Bentele (born August 26, 1905 in Buchenegg , today part of Oberstaufen; † June 8, 1987 in Oberstaufen ) was a German sculptor who earned a national and international reputation in the field of Christian art . He also emerged as a crib carver.

life and work

The clinker

Bentele first learned from Erich Kuhn (* 1890) in Düsseldorf and then studied at the Munich Art Academy with Adolf Fleischmann and Karl Killer and with Joseph Fassnacht (* 1873).

His body of work includes mainly sculptures of sacred nature, such as for churches. However, profane works were also created, including portrait busts of well-known personalities, including Pope Pius XII. , Cardinal von Galen , Albert Schweitzer , Gertrud von Le Fort , Pablo Casals , Jean Cocteau and Yehudi Menuhin . He mainly worked with stone and bronze , sometimes with wood. His artistic signature was in the style of Ernst Barlach .

Bentele's sculptures have been exhibited and awarded worldwide. In 1961 he exhibited in Cologne and in 1971 in the Galleria d'Arte Il Semaforo in Florence .

A street in Oberstaufen was named after him.

The figure on the fishing fountain at the town hall in Langenhagen is intended to remind of the local fishing tradition. The Klönschnack in Hannover-Kirchrode also comes from his studio. Works by him are rarely found on the auction market.
