Fidelis Bentele (painter)

Fidelis Bentele (born April 5, 1830 in Tettnang , † March 27, 1901 in Stuttgart ) was a German animal , history and church painter .

Live and act

Fidelis Bentele was trained in painting from 1846 to 1849 at the Munich Academy and from 1850 under Bernhard von Neher at the Stuttgart Art School . He received a scholarship and lived in Rome from 1856 to 1859. In 1859 he was appointed professor for ornament and landscape drawing at the building trade school in Stuttgart.

Together with Hans Martin and Wilhelm Waldraff, he carried out the interior painting from 1858–1860 as part of the restoration work on the Tettnang parish church. In Upper Swabia he made a name for himself as a church painter and created genre pieces, portraits and templates for glass windows. Important paintings are “Christ on the Cross” in the St. Jakobskirche in Ravensburg , the “Barmherzige Samariter” in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and “Amor und Psyche” in private ownership. Further works are exhibited today in the Tettnang Montfort Museum .

He was the son of the veterinarian Josef Bentele in Tettnang and Franziska Günther. In Stuttgart he married Ulrike Mathilde Mährle in 1863 (born August 6, 1827 Lustnau ; † February 13, 1912 in Rottweil ). He was Catholic and was buried in Stuttgart at the Fangelsbach cemetery.
