Sankt Mariä Himmelfahrt is a Roman Catholic chapel in the Sankt Augustinian district of Birlinghoven in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is a branch church of St. Martinus in Niederpleis and thus belongs to the Catholic pastoral care area of Sankt Augustin in the Rhein-Sieg district dean of the Archdiocese of Cologne . The chapel, dedicated in 1874 stands as a monument under monument protection .

history

For centuries the village of Birlinghoven belonged to the parish church of St. Margareta in Stieldorf . The decision to build their own chapel was made in 1871. The foundation stone was laid that same year, and the simple brick building was inaugurated in 1874. The building at that time was single-nave , had a roof turret , a three-sided choir and lancet-shaped windows. Regular Sunday and public holiday services did not exist until 1907, after the church building became the property of the parish of Stieldorf.

Soon the chapel was too small, so it was expanded in 1932 according to plans by the architect Karl Band . To the north, a new nave was built, which is followed by a rectangular sanctuary with an overlying bell tower adjoined. After the building was badly damaged in the Second World War , extensive renovations and repairs took place from 1965 to 1971.

In the course of the municipal reform in 1969 , the place Birlinghoven was incorporated into Sankt Augustin, whereupon the parish was incorporated into the parish of St. Martinus in Niederpleis in 1972.

Furnishing

Sankt Mariä Himmelfahrt has an Oberlinger organ with five stops. Also striking are an oil painting that was created around 1700, an external statue of the Virgin Mary and two angels from the Baroque period.
