Othmar Gächter

Othmar Gächter SVD (born July 17, 1941 in Tobel TG ) is a Swiss theologian .

Life

After the Matura type A with Greek and Latin in Sarnen in 1963 he studied philosophy , theology and religious studies in St. Gabriel, Mödling near Vienna (1963–1970) and as a guest student Indology and Sanskrit studies at the University of Vienna (1967–1968). He received degrees in Theology and MA in Religious Studies from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (1973). He studied Sanskrit at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London (1973–1974). He received his PhD in Indian philosophy and religion in 1978 from Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi . He researched and taught in India (1977–1986, 1994, 2000 and 2010). He taught as a lecturer (1987) and professor of religious studies (1998–2009) at the Philosophical-Theological University SVD Sankt Augustin . He was working on Anthropos. His main research interests are Hinduism, Sikhism and Islam v. a. Popular religion in India, Kalamkari art - hand-painted textiles from Andhra Pradesh (India) in Hindu and Christian tradition as well as culture and religion in the encounter with the foreign.
