Dominion Tobel

Commandery Tobel in the 18th century

Between 1226 and 1228 the Toggenburg counts Diethelm II and Diethelm III founded. the Johanniterkomturei Tobel located on the Way of St. James and richly endowed with goods , which was built as a bulwark against the politically expanding monastery of St. Gallen . At the new burial site of the Toggenburgers, a master's degree , a priest and two brothers are documented for 1263 , a convent for 1266 and a commander for 1270 ; the earliest chapter seal dates from 1279.

By the end of the 15th century, the Commandery built up the Tobel rule through systematic acquisition of goods, tithe and court rights . This included the lower dishes Tobel with Affeltrangen, Braunau, Buch , Märwil , Tägerschen, Tobel and Zezikon as well as Herten near Frauenfeld. In 1228 the Commandery acquired the Vogtei over Tobel, 1258 goods in Tägerschen, 1275 to 1286 rights to the parish churches Affeltrangen and Märwil, 1348 Twing and Bann over half of Zezikon and 1380 property in Herten. In addition, there was expansion into the lower Lauchetal and into the area of the Lords of Bussnang : in 1396 it obtained the church set of Wuppenau , 1401 that of Wängi (1402 incorporation ), 1464 the church set and tithe rights to Bussnang as well as tithe rights in Ober- and Niederbussnang and the benefices of Schönholzerswilen . The Tobel rule existed until 1798.

After the collapse of the Order of Malta with the German tongue , the canton of Thurgau took over the commandery in 1807 and set up a breeding and labor establishment for men and women on the farm in 1811. In 1973 the cantonal penal institution in the former Tobel Commandery was closed and in 1992 the farm was relocated. In 2006 the vacant buildings of the Commandery passed to the newly established Commandery Tobel Foundation .

Parish

Catholic Church of St. Johann

In church terms, Tobel belonged to the Affeltrangen parish in the Middle Ages . With the establishment of the Commandery, the new parish of Tobel arose within the boundaries of the Tobel Lower Court, comprising Affeltrangen, Braunau, part of Buch bei Märwil as well as Märwil, Tägerschen, Tobel and Zezikon. The church of St. Johann Baptista stood next to the commandery in the valley in the late Middle Ages and was rebuilt on the heights between 1706 and 1707.

The whole parish of Tobel converted to the new faith in 1529 . In 1532 the Commandery initiated the re-Catholicization . After the erection of a high altar in the church of St. Johann in 1535, the Reformed service in Tobel ceased before 1560. The fair was reintroduced in Wuppenau in 1560 and in Bussnang in 1596. From 1569 onwards, the Reformed population of Tobel was actually part of the church in Affeltrangen, although from 1664 the mass was again permitted there. In 1569, Märwil became a branch of the Reformed Church in Affeltrangen, and the reformed Wängi in 1602 became a branch of Aadorf . Even if the Counter-Reformation came to an end with the consecration of the Tobel parish church in 1642, there were numerous tensions between the Reformed parishes and the Catholic collator of the Tobel parish until the 18th century .

economy

The municipality received 1441 and 1486 opening . The village developed around the commandery and was the capital of the Tobel district from 1798 to 1871 . In the 19th century the Tobler farmers switched from arable farming to cattle, dairy farming and fruit growing. In 1885 a cheese dairy was established. In the 18th century, calico and canvas weaving took off in Tobel; it was replaced by hand embroidery after the middle of the 19th century . Ship embroidery emerged around 1900, and until the 1920s it shaped the village livelihood structure with small-scale farming. In 1911 Tobel was connected to the Mittelthurgau Railway .

With the population growth that began after 1960 and the construction of numerous single-family houses, Tobel became a rural residential community.
