Jona is a place in the political municipality of Rapperswil-Jona in the lake district in the southwest of the Swiss canton of St. Gallen .
geography
The local area of Jona covers an area of 20.93 km², a small part of which is on Lake Zurich. The population orientates itself socially, economically and culturally towards Zurich, because the canton capital St. Gallen is separated by the Rickenpass and is more difficult to reach than Zurich.
history

Early history
The area of Jonah was already settled by the Celts and later by the Romans. Numerous archaeological finds are evidence of this. The vicus Kempraten is the largest known Roman settlement in today's canton of St. Gallen. The Alemannic settlement emerged in the 7th century in the form of a scattered settlement, which gradually grouped into six hamlets (Jona, Busskirch, Kempraten, Wurmsbach, Bollingen and Wagen). The place name is derived from the river name , Latinized in the 9th century as Johanna , in the 13th century as Jonun .
middle Ages
Around 1200, the lords of Rapperswil had manorial power and jurisdiction, while the settlement belonged to different parishes, divided between the Pfäfers monastery, the Einsiedeln monastery and the Rüti Premonstratensian monastery. The hamlet of Wurmsbach had a parish church of St. Dionys , which lost its importance after the founding of the Cistercian convent Wurmsbach (1259) and was finally incorporated into the parish of Busskirch (1369). A parish of Jona was founded by the Lords of Rapperswil in the 13th century, which was integrated into the administration of the Rapperswil parish in the 14th century. In the 15th century there were sister houses in Widen, Grüenwald, Ferrenwald and Balberin.
In the 14th century the rule fell to the Habsburgs, and in 1415 again to the city of Rapperswil. In 1531 the inhabitants declared themselves reformed in an iconoclasm; but the Reformation was reversed after two months by the central Swiss patrons of Rapperswil.
Helvetic and Swiss Confederation
When the Helvetic Republic was founded , the impoverished courtiers wanted to form a community with Rapperswil, but Rapperswil refused and so Jona became a separate community in the canton of Linth , since 1803 in the lake district in the canton of St. Gallen. In the 19th century the first craftsmen settled next to the farms and the young community grew in the shadow of Rapperswil.
The former community of Jona included the localities of Bollingen and Wagen as well as the areas of Kempraten , Busskirch and Wurmsbach . The area of Jona encircled the town of Rapperswil and pushes both sides of Seedamms at the Lake Zurich and on the upper lake .
The Joner coat of arms showed Maria , the Jona river and the roses from Rapperswil. The coat of arms dates from the 19th century and was no longer used after the merger with Rapperswil.
Since the Second World War
Jonah experienced a boom after World War II . During this time, numerous housing cooperatives were founded to provide inexpensive apartments for the middle and lower classes. The sanitary appliance company Geberit has been based in Jona since 1962 . Connected to the Zurich S-Bahn since 1990 with the S 5 , the S 15 connection introduced in 2006 triggered a further phase of growth. When it merged with Rapperswil, the population of Jonas (18,000) was more than twice as large as that of Rapperswil.
Merger with Rapperswil
Jona and Rapperswil already had a common infrastructure before the merger. Its border was fluid, it can hardly be made out from the air. After unsuccessful attempts in 1999, the population of Rapperswil and Jona agreed on November 30, 2003, in a fundamental vote, to the initiatives submitted in both communities to unite the two communities , Jona with a yes share of 52% and Rapperswil with a yes share of 82%. With the vote on the Unification Treaty on May 1, 2005, majorities in both municipalities were achieved in favor of the merger; Jona with 61.1% yes-shares (voting participation 64.7%) and Rapperswil with 89.2% yes-shares (voting participation 60.4%). On January 1, 2007, Rapperswil merged with the former political municipality of Jona to form the new municipality of Rapperswil-Jona.
Before the merger there was a community council in Jona. This consisted of 7 members and a community clerk. The last replacement elections took place in September 2004. The citizens voted on political matters in the citizens' assembly.
Demographics
Before the merger in 2007, around 18,000 people officially lived in the community of Jona. At the end of 2009, 26,034 people lived in Rapperswil-Jona .
The official language of the former municipality is written German ; In everyday life, mainly Swiss German is spoken in the Zurich dialect.
Infrastructure
The very open attitude towards building applications resulted in different architectural styles in Jona. An actual old community core did not remain and had to give way to a shopping center. Occasionally old farm buildings have remained standing (Neuhof, Restaurant Johanna) which show the past times.
Churches
In Jona there is the catholic parish Jona with the churches Maria Himmelfahrt , St. Wendelin in Wagen and the parish St. Pankraz in Bollingen. The Catholic parish church of St. Franziskus in Kempraten was looked after by the parish of Rapperswil before the parishes merged . The medieval chapel of St. Dionys is located near the industrial area of Buech . The St. Martinskirche Busskirch is popular for weddings and christenings because of its location directly on the lake. The Protestant parish is active across both parts of the city and has one church each in Rapperswil and Jona.
Recreational areas
Jona has recreational areas and green areas. The meadow next to the Joner train station is an inheritance from Lotte Stiefel.
In the north is the Jonerwald with Vitaparcours . In the south is the protected shore of Lake Zurich. In 2006 the Nature Conservation Commission wanted to bring nature closer to the population. To this end, she developed the new adventure trail “Schauplatz Natur”. At various stations she shows the natural places in Jona and the surrounding area.
traffic
The city of Jona has connections to the A53 transit route (Zürcher Oberlandautobahn), which can be used to reach the A3 in the Lint plain .
Jona has a S-Bahn station with a bus station, the Blumenau stop and the Kempraten station in the center. The Bollingen stop is no longer in operation. As a measure because of the planned but not implemented tunnel construction through Rapperswil, Jona has invested in public transport in recent years. The new Jona bus station was completed in 2015.
Culture
The focus is on Villa Grünstels , which Lotte Stiefel bequeathed to the community of Jona in 1986. It houses the youth music school and the Grünstels basement stage. The two coach houses are to the north of the villa . The cultural center for contemporary culture (ZAK) is housed in a coach house and can also be rented for private purposes. The Kreuz Kulturzentrum is located south of the train station.
