The Reformed Church Rapperswil is an Evangelical Reformed church in Rapperswil , a district of the Swiss municipality of Rapperswil-Jona in the canton of St. Gallen .

location

The church is located outside of the old town of Rapperswil on Zürcherstrasse, out of town towards Kempraten on the Kempraten Bay . The cemetery is part of a garden with an ornamental fountain that surrounds the church building on the sides facing away from the road.

History of the parish

Since its foundation in 1838, the Protestant-Reformed parish of Rapperswil-Jona has formed a unified parish with Rapperswil and Jona - the two cities of Rapperswil and Jona only merged in 2006 to form the municipality of Rapperswil-Jona. On September 2, 1838 Pastor C. M. Wirth was installed in his office. The patrons of the parish included the factory owners Albert Brändlin-Staub, son-in-law of Johann Jakob Staub and partner in the Brändlin spinning mill , Johannes Hürlimann and Johann Heinrich Bühler-Honegger, founding member of the Südostbahn and initiator of the “Bühler-Allee” between the Endingerturm and the Haldenturm around the Rapperswil castle hill . With the cantonal constitution of 1862, the Protestant parish received tax law. A church choir was founded for the 50th anniversary. In 1936, a three-meter-wide strip of land on Zürcherstrasse to protect the park was bought by the local community of Rapperswil at a special price of seven Swiss francs per square meter. The Bürkligut area and the Alter Pfauen property with parks were given to the parish by the donors Julie and Nanny Bürkly; this is where the evangelical parish hall in Rapperswil was built. In 1945 the Humbel property was acquired for the rectory at Kirchstrasse 46.

In 1950 the Protestant school community inaugurated the Hanfländer schoolhouse . In 1963 the parish elected Pastor Martha Stuber von Biberist as the first full-time pastor in the canton of St. Gallen. With the women's right to vote granted in 1968, the community elected two women for the first time in 1970. In 1972 the church council approved the construction of the Jona Evangelical Church Center, which was inaugurated on November 30, 1976, financed to a large extent by patronage from parishioners. In 1979 the parish hall in Rapperswil was renewed, and in 1986 the rectory. By 1922 the parish had grown to over 760 members, in 1946 to 3,000, in 1962 to around 6,200, in 1982 to around 6,900, and in 2013 the parish had around 7,000 members.

Building history

Construction of the church on Zürcherstrasse began in 1839 thanks to the voluntary work of parishioners, and the topping-out ceremony was held at the end of August 1840 . Thanks to two generous patrons, the manufacturers Albert Brändlin-Staub and Johannes Hürlimann, the parish's debts for the construction of the church were quickly repaid. In 1870, National Councilor Heinrich Bühler-Honegger, head of the Rüti machine factory, took over the church presidium: thanks to his generous donations, the necessary church renovation was carried out, and an overall renovation was carried out in the 1950s. In 1964, the new parish hall in Rapperswil was inaugurated and the church was expanded to include a morgue.
