The Haldenturm is one of the four remaining towers of the medieval city fortifications of Rapperswil , a district of the Swiss municipality of Rapperswil-Jona in the canton of St. Gallen .

location

The Haldenturm was a bulwark in the northeastern part of the old town of Rapperswil as part of the outer curtain wall of the city wall , parallel to the main fortification between the castle , the parish church and the Breny tower on Herrenberg and the Halsturm at Engelplatz . Since the 1830s, it has stood around 100 meters northwest of the passage from the Müsegg tower to the Giessi, isolated at the mouth of the Stadtbach or directly on the Kempraten Bay .

Building history

Siege of Rapperswil by Central Switzerland during the Old Zurich War, Chronicle by Johannes Stumpf , 1554

The building history of the former tower of the outer ring wall is unclear. The two-storey building could have been built in the late 14th century with the eastern extension of the city fortifications. In Stumpf's chronicle of 1554 , the attempted capture of the Schwyz fighting raft called "Bär" in the Kempratner Bay by the Rapperswil / Habsburg occupation during the Old Zurich War is shown. This tried to pull the war raft to the city walls with a hook hidden in the water. The western city fortifications around today's Capuchin monastery can be clearly seen, on the far left the Haldenturm and the Lindenhof and the striking city view with the city parish church, the castle and the historic pier in the background. The building on the northwest slope of the Lindenhof was probably built as a shell tower with a semicircular pointed roof.

Since the demolition of the city fortifications, the well-preserved bulwark has been used as a storage room and every Wednesday as a meditation room and is integrated into the playground on the Giesse. Until the construction of the Bühler-Allee between Einsiedlerhaus - Endingerturm and Giessi -Wiese, the building lay on the lake shore, as a bulwark of the outer wall between Endingerhorn and Müsegg tower .
