The Engelplatz in Rapperswil

The Haus zum Alten Sternen is a town house at Engelplatz at the eastern end of the old town of Rapperswil , a district of the Swiss municipality of Rapperswil-Jona in the canton of St. Gallen .

Building history

The inn on Engelplatz owned by the innkeeper, Hans Ross, was first mentioned in 1528 . Today's Haus zum Alten Sternen on Engelplatz in Rapperswil was built as an inn in 1568 after the previous building and two other houses fell victim to a fire. In 1630 Peter Tschudi had a new roof structure built. Numerous cannonball impacts from the siege of 1656 can be seen in the attic , when the building in the eastern fortress section of the city at the former Halstor served as a bulwark . In 1790 the building was rebuilt. Until 1829, a staircase led from the inn to the adjacent Halsturm. The outlines of the city gate, which was demolished around 1835, are marked with paving stones in the floor of Engelplatz. The south and west sides are windowed in the Gothic architectural style.

From 1900 to 1941 the building housed a non-alcoholic restaurant, later the first Migros branch in Rapperswil rented the ground floor. The pale red house has been used as a commercial and office building since 1965.
