Müseggturm in Rapperswil, view from Engelplatz

The Müseggturm is one of the four remaining towers of the medieval city fortifications of Rapperswil , a district of the Swiss municipality of Rapperswil-Jona in the canton of St. Gallen .

location

The Müseggturm was a bulwark in the fortress section of the city wall , between the Breny tower on Herrenberg and the Halsturm at Engelplatz , in the northeastern part of the old town of Rapperswil . Adjacent to the left, an approximately three and eight meter high part of the city wall has been preserved, which is used as a passage to the Giessi at the mouth of the city stream or to the Kempraten Bay . The Haldenturm, which has been isolated since the 1830s, lies about 100 meters to the northwest .

Building history

The history of the building is largely unclear. The building could have been built in the late 14th century when the city fortifications were expanded to the east. Knight Hannibal von Bocksberg is mentioned as the first owner in 1576. Only in the then newly created insurance register from 1807 is the building listed as " Thurm in der Müsegg " including stables with an insured sum of 200 guilders. 14 changes of ownership are mentioned between 1840 and 1979. A piece of the city wall, attached to the Müsegg tower, forms the end of Engelplatz.

Since the demolition of the city fortifications, the former bulwark at Engelplatz 18 has been used as a residential building. The building has four upper floors, with the top floor being designed in half-timbered construction and crowned by a gable roof . A walled outline has been preserved on the outside, perhaps a high entrance as access from the former sea-side wall to the Haldenturm .
