Benken was the main town in the former Gaster district . Benken is located in the Linth area, bordering the canton of Schwyz ( Reichenburg ) and the canton of Glarus ( Bilten , municipality of Glarus Nord ).

In Giessen, southwest of the village center, the Linth Canal and the parallel high-voltage lines change their direction. The local mountain of Benken is the Benkner Büchel .

history

The current village name gradually developed from Babinchova to Benken. The name Babinchova refers to the farm of an Alemannic landowner Babo or Bebo, a brother-in-law of the donor Beata, who was registered in 741. The name of the farm appears shortly after 1050 as Bebenchon and as Bebinkon and at the end of the 12th century as Benken in the documents.

On the Benkner Büchel , in the Kastlet, where a Meinrad chapel has stood since 1909 , Jakob Grüninger discovered a fortified settlement from the Hallstatt period in 1939 . Roman silver coins came to light in the Starrberg, in the area of today's train station. 741 and 744 documents were issued in the Babinchova Monastery.

In the 11th century, the Counts of Lenzburg, as heirs of the Rhaetian property in Gaster, gave away large parts of the Benken farm and the church treasures to the Schänis Abbey . As a result, Benken was ecclesiastically and manorial under Schänis , politically under the respective sovereigns, i.e. Lenzburg , Kyburg and Habsburg . From 1438 to 1798 Benken was one of the six Tagwen within the Bailiwick of Gaster, which is under Schwyz and Glarus. In the Helvetic Republic , Benken belonged to the Schänis district and in 1803 became an independent municipality in the new canton of St. Gallen.

Attractions

The Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul was built from 1792 to 1795 and extended in 1917/18. The decor in the neo- baroque style comes from Albert Rimli . The vault pictures were created by August Müller in 1919.

The nationally known pilgrimage site of Maria Bildstein , which dates back to 1519, is located on the Benkner Büchel . The numerous chapels and grottoes from the 19th century form an ensemble that is unique in the northern Alpine region. Today's pilgrimage church dates from 1966 and has valuable furnishings.

Energy industry

The electricity is distributed by the Benken Electricity Supply (EVB). Their suppliers are the St. Gallisch-Appenzellische Kraftwerke (SAK) and Axpo AG . Axpo and EWZ enjoy transmission rights for higher voltage levels. The Benken substation has stood to the left of the Linth Canal since 1961 . A start was made there to divert electrical energy from the 220 kV line from Sils-Fällanden to Saturdayern . In 1994 the old system was replaced by a new, remote-controlled 380 kV station. This is where the 380 kV Benken-Mettlen line begins in addition to the 220 kV branch to Saturdayern .

Infrastructure

Outside of town, Benken is rich in agricultural zones . The main street called "Benknerstrasse" connects the village with Reichenburg and Kaltbrunn . This is used with the Reichenburg-Benken-Kaltbrunn- Uznach post bus line. Benken has a train station on the Rapperswil - Glarus - Linthal line of the Swiss Federal Railways .
