The St. Gallo-Appenzellische Kraftwerke AG (SAK), based in St. Gallen is a Swiss power company .
history
Around 1900 there were around 900 small power plants in operation throughout Switzerland, whose electricity generation at that time would hardly have been sufficient to supply a single larger town. In the cantons of St. Gallen and both Appenzell, apart from the Kubelwerk , only small and very small plants were built.
In the years 1910/11 numerous small electricity companies were active in Eastern Switzerland . That is why negotiations were started between the cantons of St. Gallen, Thurgau and both Appenzell to examine whether the establishment of an intercantonal power plant company would be possible. The negotiations did not lead to any results for the time being.
When Nordostschweizerische Kraftwerke was founded in 1914 , negotiations between the cantons of St. Gallen and Appenzell Ausserrhoden were resumed and led to the founding agreement of St.Gallisch-Appenzellische Kraftwerke AG (SAK) of 28/29. August 1914. In 1924 the SAK joined the Nordostschweizerische Kraftwerke. In 1951 the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden declared its membership of the SAK.
Although the SAK was founded in the form of a public limited company under private law , it is a work of the partner cantons with the purpose of ensuring the electricity supply of the partner cantons for the public and economic interests.
The parliaments of the partner cantons can only exert a very limited influence on the SAK. The responsibility therefore lies primarily with the governments and the representatives they appoint, so that they too exercise their influence only to the extent that this is possible as a shareholder and board member of a shareholder. As in any public limited company, a significant part of business activity is determined by management.
Business areas
Its business areas include power generation, power and heat supply, a fiber optic network and internet, TV and telephone services as well as the promotion of e-mobility and renewable energies. With around 330 employees, it covers the entire value chain: from energy procurement through planning, construction, operation and maintenance of networks and systems to sales and invoicing. The SAK supplies around 470,000 people (82 local energy supply companies, 70,000 private and business customers and 500 major customers) with energy in the three cantons of St. Gallen , Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Appenzell Innerrhoden .
Carrier cantons
St.Gallisch-Appenzellische Kraftwerke AG only joined NOK as a shareholder in 1928.
