The Muslen power plant is a hydropower plant in Switzerland. It is located on Lake Walen , below Amden and between the municipalities of Bethlis and Weesen in the canton of St. Gallen. It belongs to the St. Gallisch-Appenzellische Kraftwerke AG (SAK) and has an annual electricity production of 4.5 GWh .
history
In 1907/09 the Muslen power plant was built by the municipality of Amden to use the water power of the Muslenbach. With the dam "im Zand" a collection pond was created for a volume of 46,000 m³ , of which 17,000 m³ could be used directly. A pressure pipe of 300 m length and 175 m height difference conducted the water into the power plant on Lake Walen. The plant consisted of two Pelton turbines with 150 hp each .
Takeover by St. Gallisch-Appenzellische Kraftwerke AG
In 1919 the SAK acquired the Muslenwerk. In 1933 they replaced the two old turbines with a new Pelton turbine with an output of 400 hp and a synchronous generator . After many years of operation, the question of a complete renovation arose at this plant. Supported by technical and energy-related clarifications, it was decided in 1980. After almost two years of construction , the plant was officially inaugurated on September 6, 1982 and was extensively renovated and expanded.
The dam wall was increased by 5 m, which increased the storage volume to 83,000 m³ and the usable amount to 54,000 m³. A new overground pressure line with a diameter of 0.7 m was laid. The Sellbach located to the east was newly integrated and operates a small turbine with a flow rate of 0.25 m³ / s and an output of 80 kW. The very outdated Pelton turbine was replaced by a new single-flow Francis turbine with a flow rate of 1 m³ / s and an output of 1630 kW. The Francis turbine is coupled to an asynchronous generator . The total renewal increased the annual production from 1.7 to 4.5 million kWh.
