Jean Spiropoulos

Jean Spiropoulos , actually Ioannis Georgiou Spyropoulos ( Greek Ιωάννης Σπυρόπουλος , born  October 16, 1896 in Nafplio ; †  August 7, 1972 in Athens ), was a Greek lawyer . He worked as a professor of international law at the Universities of Thessaloniki and Athens and from 1958 to 1967 as a judge at the International Court of Justice .

Life

Jean Spiropoulos was born in Nafplio in 1896 and completed his school education in Hamburg , Zurich , Lausanne and Lugano . He then studied from 1917 to 1920 at the University of Zurich and from 1921 at the University of Leipzig , where he completed his studies in 1922 with a doctorate on airspace as part of the national territory . In the same year he became an assistant at the Institute for International Law at the University of Kiel , where he acted as section head from 1925 and became a private lecturer two years later .

In 1928 he changed to a professorship for international law at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki , from 1939 to 1958 he taught at the University of Athens . In 1929 he also taught at the Hague Academy for International Law . From 1949 to 1957 he was a member of the United Nations International Law Commission . He then worked as a judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague from 1958 to 1967 , having previously worked as an ad hoc judge there in one case. He died in Athens in 1972 .

Legal philosophical views

Due to his training, Jean Spiropoulos was influenced by the German-Austrian school of thought in international law, which emphasized the importance of legal positivist principles . Nonetheless, he rejected orthodox legal positivism. Rather, he derived certain principles from the practice of state action, which he placed as general legal principles alongside international treaty law and customary international law .

Awards

Jean Spiropoulos was a member of the Institut de Droit international from 1950 and from 1955 also belonged to the Academy of Athens .
