Panagiotis Zepos

Panagiotis Zepos ( Greek Παναγιώτης Ζέπος ; * December 1, 1908 in Athens ; † May 18, 1985 ) was a Greek legal scholar and politician.

Life

Panagiotis Zepos was the son of the famous lawyer Ioannis Zepos ( Greek Ιωάννης Ζέπος ). He studied at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and was there in 1931 with a thesis on the condominiums in modern Greek private law doctorate . Following his doctorate, he completed a two-year study visit to Berlin. In 1934 he was at the University of Athens habilitation .

From 1934 on, Zepos taught first as a lecturer, from 1940 as a full professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki until he was recalled to the Athens University in 1953. Zepos' academic work focused on Byzantine legal history and modern Greek private law. His textbook on Greek law of obligations, the second edition of which appeared in 1965, became a standard work. Zepos also commented on German civil law in several articles in German. He also published on problems of comparative law .

In addition to his scientific work, Zepos held several high political offices. As early as 1935 he held the office of General Secretary in the Ministry of Justice. After the Second World War, he was Secretary General of the Ministry of Education in 1945. After the overthrow of the military dictatorship in Greece on July 23, 1974, Zepos served from October 9 to November 21 of the same year as Minister of the Interior in the government of national unity led by Konstantinos Karamanlis . In the government formed on November 21 after the first free elections, again under the leadership of Karamanlis, Zepos became Minister for Education and Culture. He held this office until a cabinet reshuffle on January 5, 1976. He was succeeded by Georgios Rallis .

Honors

In 1970 Zepos became a member of the Academy of Athens , whose members elected him president for one year in 1975. He was also a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome and the Académie internationale de droit comparé. After Zepos had already received an honorary doctorate from the University of Freiburg in 1957 , friends and colleagues from Germany dedicated a three-volume commemorative publication to him on his 65th birthday in 1973 .
