The national highway is located in the Berlin district of Westend the district Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf . It is the main shopping street in Neu-Westend .

location

The Reichsstraße runs from Theodor-Heuss-Platz to Spandauer Damm , which it meets in the area of the former Spandauer Bock . It can be reached via the stations of the underground line 2 Theodor-Heuss-Platz and Neu-Westend and the bus line 104 travels through it to Brixplatz .

It should not be confused with the nearby Heerstraße , which in Berlin combines the Reichsstraßen, which have been designated since 1932, and today's Bundesstraßen 2 and 5 .

Steubenplatz

The winner of Louis Tuaillon on Steubenplatz

About the middle of Reichsstraße and the center of Neu-Westend is Steubenplatz, which is named after Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben (1730–1794), a Prussian officer and later general in the American War of Independence . Preußenallee, Olympische Strasse, Bolivarallee and Ebereschenallee all flow into Steubenplatz. The equestrian statue The Winner, placed in the center of the square, is striking . The figure created in 1902 by Louis Tuaillon for Eduard Arnhold's private garden in Berlin-Wannsee was installed there in 1961.

The traditional pub Westend-Klause is located on Steubenplatz, where the writer Joachim Ringelnatz, who lived on Brixplatz - then Sachsenplatz - was a regular guest in the early 1930s. From 1939 to 1967, the Puck movie theater was located on the northeast side of the square , and its premises are now used by a supermarket. At the confluence of Bolivarallee with Steubenplatz, the three ladies from the grill food truck , only used for film purposes, stood for years .

history

Reichsstrasse has been named after December 8, 1906 and was previously Strasse 7a in the Westend development plan. The name refers to the proclamation of the Prussian King Wilhelm I as German Emperor on January 18, 1871, through which the German Empire was founded as a constitutional monarchical federal state. By 1918 it comprised 22 monarchical and three republican states as well as Alsace-Lorraine .

The street name has been preserved to this day, despite different political developments. In Neu-Westend, the district around Reichsstraße, many streets are named after the countries of the German Empire proclaimed in Versailles , such as the Preußen-, Hessen- and Württembergallee.

Others

In the southeastern part between Theodor-Heussplatz and Steubenplatz, Reichsstraße has a good commercial infrastructure for high living needs. The Namibian Embassy is located at Reichsstrasse 17 .
