The Giessen hydropower plant is located on the Thur near Nesslau-Krummenau , in southern Toggenburg. The plant belongs to St. Gallisch-Appenzellische Kraftwerke AG and produces around 5.8 GWh annually.
history
Since 1896 the company Kuhn and Grob has been running an electricity company "am Giessen" in Nesslau. Two groups of machines, each with 80 hp , used a gradient of 24 m. In 1904 an expansion took place, in the concept of which a forerunner of modern pumped storage plants can be recognized. The so-called Hochdruckakkumulieranlage used night excess energy by the water of the Thur into a 150 m above the nacelle located reservoir up pumped. Its contents were available to a 45 HP high-pressure turbine, which supported the network load when there was an increased demand for electricity. In 1908 a 90 hp petrol engine was installed.
In 1914, the power plant passed into the hands of St. Gallisch-Appenzellische Kraftwerke AG. As with the enlargement of the power plant Kubel a 950- kVA - Generator became clear that 1920/21 in the power plant Giessen got a new location. To drive this generator, two new 500 HP Francis turbines were installed.
After 40 years of operation, the system was completely renovated in 1960/61. A new machine house was built in the immediate vicinity upstream, with a vertical Kaplan turbine with a 1400 kVA generator installed. In 1970/71 the old pressure line was replaced.
The last expansion so far took place in 2001. The central building was extended by 12 m so that two new vertical Kaplan turbines with a slope of 23 m could be installed.
