geography
Ernetschwil, which is also part of the St.Galler Linth area, is nestled between hills and forests, above (north) Uznach and south of the Rickenpassstrasse . The area is heavily agricultural. In some places you will find a wonderful view of the Glarus Alps , large parts of the Lin plateau and the upper Lake Zurich .
coat of arms
The municipal coat of arms of Ernetschwil, which is now used as the village coat of arms, was created in 1905 and shows three silver six-pointed stars on a blue background. The three stars symbolize faith, hope and love. However, they could also be related to the three districts of Ricken, Gebertingen and Ernetschwil.
History (summary)
Ernetschwil's name is mentioned in writing for the first time in a document from 885. The document issued by the St.Gallen Monastery attests that the two Alemannic landowners Ittibold and Eidwart placed their farm or hamlet of Eidwarteswilare under the rule of the monastery.
A large part of the land around Ernetschwil remained in the ownership of the St.Gallen Abbey until around the year 1000. Then it fell back as a feudal lordship to the German Emperor, who passed it on to Count Rudolf von Rapperswil in 1180.
In 1200, the Ernetschwil farm association came to the county of Uznach as one of the seven Tagwen and was given a political structure for the first time.
A document issued by the chancellery of the Bishop of Constance in 1241 states that the inhabitants of Ermatswilari are parishes in Uznach.
In Uznach's tithe index, the name gradually takes on its current form: 1490 Airnetswilae , 1510 Ärnischwil .
After the founding of the Helvetic Republic in 1798, Ernetschwil and Uznach became part of the canton of Linth.
In 1803 Ernetschwil came to the political community of Gommiswald in the newly constituted canton of St. Gallen.
In 1807 Ernetschwil broke away from Gommiswald and became its own political municipality.
In 2013, Rieden, Gommiswald and Ernetschwil merged to form the unified municipality of Gommiswald.
