The Rickenpass connects the Lin Valley with the Toggenburg in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland .

geography

The pass is at 805  m above sea level. M. in the town of Ricken, which is divided between the political communities Wattwil and Gommiswald (until 2012 - before the community merger - still part of Ernetschwil ). The pass forms the cultural border between the St. Gallen- oriented Toggenburg and the Zurich- oriented See-Gaster . Depending on your point of view, it means: "The one on the other side of the back ..."

The top of the pass is framed by the Tweralpspitz ( 1331  m ) in the northwest and the Regelstein ( 1315  m ) in the southeast.

traffic

The main road 8 runs from the northeastern Wattwil to the pass in the village of Ricken and from there to the western Neuhaus. In Ricken, the less frequented and slightly higher road branches off over the Oberricken and also leads parallel to Neuhaus. Also in Ricken, the main road 427 branches off in a southerly direction via Uetliburg and Gommiswald to Kaltbrunn.

The 8 km long Rickentunnel of the Swiss Federal Railways runs under the Ricken .

history

The Rickenpass was first created in the 11th century as a mule track connecting St. Gallen and Uznach . Around 1600 the path was expanded to a road, which at that time led to armed conflicts between the Toggenburgers and the prince abbey of St. Gallen . Until 1918 a stagecoach line ran over the pass, which was then replaced by a bus service .
