The Kerenzerberg is a high plateau above the Walensee with the scattered settlements of the former communities Filzbach and Obstalden in the canton of Glarus in Switzerland . The Kerenzerberg has belonged to the political municipality of Glarus Nord since January 1st, 2011 . The road over the Kerenzerberg forms a historic pass crossing , an actual valley pass , between Mollis and Mühlehorn at 743 m altitude.
history
The old course of the road existed until 1964, when the first continuous road for cars was driven into the steep rock faces of the Kerenzerberg on the banks of the Walensee between Weesen and Mühlehorn . After further expansion in 1986, this road still forms the A3 motorway in the direction of Weesen, while the lanes in the opposite direction were relocated into the long Kerenzer tunnel.
The twin-lane Kerenzberg tunnel on the main Zurich-Chur axis was built in 1960 and replaced the 4 shorter tunnels of the old single-lane route, which also ran along the lake, in 1859. From this route a bicycle route was created , which means that there is no longer any need for bicycles to cross the pass and only vehicles that are not permitted on the motorway have to drive over the Kerenzerberg.
Economy, transport
There are various restaurants as well as summer and winter sports facilities on the Kerenzerberg. Mühlehorn is served hourly by regional trains of the Swiss Federal Railways and the other villages also by the Glarus bus. The concessionaire for bus operations is the SBB.
