The Glaubbielen (also: Glaubbüelen and Glaubbühlen ) is a Swiss passport, the Giswil in the canton of Obwalden at 485 m above sea level. M. with Schüpfheim in Entlebuch ( Canton Lucerne ) at 719 m above sea level. M. connects with a maximum gradient of 12%. The pass road is known as a panorama road and is also signposted under this name. The difference in altitude is 1126 meters. The pass is at 1611 m above sea level. M. in the community of Giswil.

From Giswil it goes on a narrow, paved road up to the pass. On this route you can see the valley of the Sarner Aa with the Sarnersee and the Stanserhorn . The middle section leads through forest before the road to the Mörlialp becomes single-lane and leads back through tree-lined meadows before the top of the pass. Up to Sörenberg at 1160 m above sea level. M. it goes downhill in stages. From there two lanes again and not quite as steep in the valley of the Waldemme between Flysch and Kalkbergen via Flühli ( 884 m above sea level ) to Schüpfheim ( 719 m above sea level ).

Winter closure

The pass is closed during the winter months. In the summer months, the pass is very popular as an excursion route, especially with motorcyclists, and there is a PostBus line over the pass to Giswil. The 1,900 m high Nünalpstock , which is easily accessible on foot , is about 4 km to the north-west of the Glaubbielenpass .

history

In the Middle Ages, a mule track led from Schüpfheim in Entlebuch via Flühli, Sörenberg, Glaubbielen to Giswil. It served local trade and exchange.

With the beginning of the Second World War , the military importance of cross-connections in the foothills of the Alps grew. The focus was on the road-like connection across the Glaubberg mountain . With the expansion of the Alpine Redoubt , these Rochade axes ( Flühli barrier ) became even more important. With Russian and Polish internees , the first construction work was started on Glaubbielen in 1941, but this did not progress well and was stopped in 1947.

In 1956 the project was reactivated by the Obwalden government council and the Giswilers with the demand to create an important improvement for the extensive alpine and forest areas and the agricultural homes. Construction began in 1960 and in 1965 the new 17-kilometer “Panoramastrasse” from Giswil to the canton border in front of Sörenberg was inaugurated.
