Flühli is a municipality in the Entlebuch constituency in the canton of Lucerne in Switzerland and includes the districts of Flühli and Sörenberg .

geography

The municipality is located in the Central Swiss Pre-Alps and is the largest municipality in the canton of Lucerne with an area of 108.17 km². Parts of the two largest moorland landscapes in Switzerland are located in the municipality: Faithberg and Sörenberg. The Kalkberge include the Schwändelifluh , the Grönfluh and the Schrattenfluh .

The community comprises two districts, namely Flühli and Sörenberg , which at the same time form independent parishes. Flühli is not only the largest municipality in the canton of Lucerne, but with the Brienzer Rothorn ( 2350  m above sea level ) also has the highest point in the entire canton.

In its own canton, Flühli borders the communities of Escholzmatt-Marbach , Hasle and Schüpfheim . Neighboring communities in the canton of Bern are Brienz BE , Habkern , Oberried am Brienzersee , Schangnau and Schwanden bei Brienz . Neighboring communities in the canton of Obwalden are Giswil and Sarnen .

population

Population development

1784 799
1860 1,697
1870 1,542
1888 1'527
1900 1,388
1941 1,450
1980 1,395
1990 1,588
2000 1,737
2004 1,842
2016 1'937

The population grew steadily from 1798 to 1860 and even doubled (1798-1860: +112.3%). After this unusual growth for the region, the community was drawn in by the time. This was followed by a phase of emigration (1860–1900: −18.2%) to industrial areas and overseas ( United States ) until 1900 . This was followed by a long period of stable population, with the exception of 1941, when soldiers were presumably added. Since 1980 the population has grown quite strongly, not least because of the important tourism (1980–2004: +32.0%).

languages

The population uses a highly Alemannic dialect as their everyday language. The local variant differs significantly from the dialect of the city of Lucerne because of its proximity to the canton of Bern . At the last census in 2000, 93.49% said German, 1.04% Albanian and 0.81% Italian were the main languages.

Religions - denominations

The entire population used to be members of the Roman Catholic Church. For fear of unwanted religious influences from the neighboring Reformed Canton of Bern, the church authorities tried to check the people's zeal for faith by means of regular religious visits. Religiousness is still far above the national and cantonal average. But due to immigration from the other regions of Switzerland and abroad and a few dozen church departures, the religious landscape looks like this today (as of 2000): There are 81.29% Roman Catholic, 7.83% Evangelical Reformed and 0.63% orthodox christians. In addition, there are 2.88% non-religious, 2.30% Muslims and 1.84% members of other non-Christian denominations (mostly Hindus of Tamil origin). The Muslims are almost exclusively Albanians from Macedonia and Kosovo.

Origin - nationality

At the end of 2014, of the 1,880 inhabitants, 1,555 were Swiss and 325 (= 17.3%) were foreigners. The population consisted of 82.7% Swiss citizens. At the end of 2014, the foreign residents came from Germany (10.8%), Portugal (7.7%), Spain (0.6%), Turkey (0.6%), Italy (0.3%) and Serbia included Kosovo (0.3%). 29.5% came from the rest of Europe and 50.2 % came from outside Europe.

history

Aerial photo (1954)

The first recorded event in the Waldemme valley is the battle of Sörenberg . Obwaldner and Entlebucher fought there in 1380 for possession of the alpine pastures. The name of the Alp “Schlacht” at the foot of the Brienzer Rothorn is still a reminder of this event.

Until 1869 there were several glassblowing factories in Flühli that produced the well-known Flühli glass .

Glassmakers from the Black Forest, where Black Forest glass was produced as early as the 12th century, expanded glass production. In 1723 the three brothers Josef, Peter and Michael, sons of the glass master Samuel Siegwart and Anna Schmidt, moved from Windberg near St. Blasien from Daar to Flühli and built a new glassworks here. There were glassworks in Entlebuch from 1400 onwards, and that at Röthenbach in the Emmental is definitely occupied . The descendants founded the Glasi Hergiswil .

During the Second World War, the defense became the redoubt and the Brünig axis the extensive dam site Flühli built.

politics

  • Hans Lipp: Mayor
  • Vroni Thalmann-Bieri: Social Director
  • Sigi Bieri

Cantonal elections

In the 2015 Cantonal Council elections for the Canton of Lucerne, the proportion of voters in Flühli was: CVP 48.1%, FDP 25.8%, SVP 23.9%, SP 1.1%, GPS 1.0%.

National Council elections

In the 2015 Swiss parliamentary elections, the share of the vote in Flühli was: SVP 37.7%, CVP 36.3%, FDP 21.0%, SP 2.3%, GPS 1.3%, glp 1.0%, BDP 0, 5%.

economy

Cattle breeding and dairy farming, as well as calf fattening and cattle grazing (approx. 4000 pieces) are the most important areas of agriculture. Arable land has practically disappeared since the cultivation battle in World War II. Wood processing occupies an important place in trade, but there is no actual industry. 28 percent of jobs are in the agriculture and forestry sector. 23 percent of employees work in trade and industry, but almost half of the jobs are in the services sector.

In the second half of the 20th century, tourism developed into the actual bread basket for the residents of Flühli and Sörenberg. In winter the Sörenberg region is a ski area and in summer a network of marked bike and hiking trails is available.

traffic

The two largest districts, Flühli-Dorf and Sörenberg, are connected to the public transport network by the Schüpfheim – Flühli – Sörenberg post bus line. In Schüpfheim there is a train station on the Lucerne-Bern line. In summer, the PostBus travels on the so-called panorama road across the Glaubbielen to Giswil in the canton of Obwalden.

The community is away from the main traffic connections and the nearest motorway connections are far away. In summer the Giswil connection is on the A8 , in winter the connection to the A2 motorway in Emmen-Nord is the closest.
