Flüeli-Ranft is a Swiss village in the municipality of Sachseln in the canton of Obwalden . The place was the home and workplace of the Swiss national saint Niklaus von Flüe , who is known as Brother Klaus , and is therefore a place of pilgrimage .

geography

Flüeli-Ranft is on a hill at 728  m above sea level. M. at the entrance of the Melchtal . The striking Melchtal mountains are visible in the background: the Widderfeld Stock , the Nünalphorn and the 2,676  m above sea level. M. high Huetstock . The location on an intermediate plateau shielded from the valley by a rocky ridge gives the village a special character. This rock (Alemannic: Flue or Flüe ) together with the Ranft (a gorge on the outskirts) gave the place its name. The village chapel of St. Karl Borromeo sits enthroned on the rock, visible from afar .

Attractions

In the village you can visit the house where the hermit and national saint Niklaus von Flüe (1417–1487), known as Brother Klaus , was born and lived. In addition to the two pilgrims' chapels, the Upper and Lower Ranft Chapel , the cell of the hermit, where he retired to in 1467, has been preserved in the Ranft Gorge .

The village of Flüeli-Ranft is classified in the inventory of protected sites in Switzerland (ISOS) as a protected site in Switzerland of national importance.

In addition to the lively pilgrimage in summer, Flüeli-Ranft is a popular starting point for hikes and mountain bike tours. One goal is the Älggi-Alp with the center (area) of Switzerland.

  • Until 2017, the Abbiglä Party took place at the beginning of May , the season-end party of the Flüeli-Ranft ski club

Economy and Infrastructure

Flüeli-Ranft is characterized by agriculture and the pilgrimage business. In addition to the Art Nouveau Hotel Paxmontana , the place offers three other hotels, youth accommodation and the Bildungshaus Zentrum Ranft (formerly Hotels Stolzenfels , Friedensdorf der Dorothea Sisters and Via Cordis ) as well as numerous holiday apartments and private rooms. In addition to the hotel restaurants, there is another restaurant as well as a bistro and a kiosk. A village shop existed until February 2014.

On the outskirts are the former building of the school and therapy home of the Juvenat der Franziskaner Foundation , which moved its headquarters to Melchtal in August 2017 .

Transport links

The post bus line 351 connects Flüeli-Ranft with Sachseln train station and on to Sarnen train station. In addition, the Postbus 343 runs from Sarnen via Kerns to Flüeli-Ranft in the evening . The Way of St. James from Stans runs through Flüeli-Ranft, Giswil and Lungern over the Brünig Pass and on to Interlaken .
