The Hotel Paxmontana in Flüeli-Ranft is a Grade II listed Art Nouveau - Hotel . It was built at the end of the 19th century as the Kurhaus Nünalphorn by the tourism pioneer Franz Hess-Michel. In the 1950s the Kurhaus received church owners who gave it the name Paxmontana .

The building

Originally built in 1896 as a modern flat roof structure , the building received its characteristic towers, which were shaped by the Heimat style, at the beginning of the 20th century . The towers are the most visible, but by no means the only witnesses of this renovation: The Lucerne architects Heinrich Walter Schumacher and Otto Schnyder extended the building to five axes from 1905–1906 towards the Bruder Klaus house and added two storeys to it. With these extensive structural measures, the owners at the time responded to the increasing demand for upscale accommodation from tourists and pilgrims. The hotel has been renovated in stages since 1999, with numerous historical parquet and terrazzo floors , stucco ceilings and ceiling paintings being renovated or exposed again.

From autumn 2009 to December 2011 the hotel was closed for extensive renovation. All rooms were renewed for a total of CHF 26 million, an elevator installed, the statics of the building renewed, fire and earthquake protection installed and seminar rooms and a new kitchen with modern supply and disposal tract added in the basement. The facade was also completely renovated and the roof with the tower structures was re-covered with the original tile pattern.

The hotel

In the beginning, the hotel was primarily used to accommodate spa guests . These were replaced in the course of the 20th century by pilgrims who visited the place of activity of Niklaus von Flüe ("Brother Klaus"). Since the renovation work and extensions in recent years, it has been attracting more and more tourists. The hotel is now a three-star hotel in the medium price segment. It has 83 rooms, a restaurant and a garden with a Kneipp basin.

In 2002, the Swiss national group of the International Council for the Preservation of Monuments (ICOMOS) granted the Paxmontana "special recognition for the above-average experience value in this historic hotel that has been restored according to monument preservation criteria". Since reopening on December 23, 2011, the hotel has remained open all year round for the first time. The hotel had previously ceased operations over the winter months.

Guest house and chalet

The hotel includes the Gasthaus Paxmontana with 16 rooms and the Chalet Paxmontana with 17 rooms, both about 200 meters from the hotel in the middle of the village Flüeli-Ranft. The Gasthaus Paxmontana was built in 1617 as a chaplain's house. The respective Flüeli chaplain lived in the house and ran a restaurant in the rooms. When in 1908 the bishop forbade the clergy to run inns, a new chaplain was built and the old chaplain became an inn known as Kurhaus Flüeli . The house was completely renovated in the 1990s. In January 2009, the Hotel Paxmontana AG acquired the Kurhaus and its surroundings and has been running it since then together with the nearby chalet under the name Gasthaus & Chalet Paxmontana . In the inn there is a restaurant with regional cuisine. The inn is closed from November to March during winter.
