1850 668
1970 470
1990 522
2000 653

The population grew rapidly in the 18th to the middle of the 19th century. Despite the high birth surplus , it sank through massive emigration overseas and into the cities until 1970. Since most of the locals have become more mobile by owning a car, emigration has been greatly reduced and the number of residents is growing again.

languages

The population speaks a high Alemannic dialect, which has similarities with the Bern German of the neighboring Emmental as well as with the other dialects of the Canton of Lucerne. At the last census in 2000, 97.70% said German, 1.68% Albanian and 0.31% Italian as their main language.

Religions - denominations

The population of Entlebuch is strictly Catholic, despite its proximity to the Reformed Canton of Bern. Today (as of 2000) the religious landscape looks like this: 94.95% are Roman Catholic, 2.14% Protestant Reformed, 1.38% Muslim and 0.46% non-denominational.

Origin - nationality

At the end of 2014, 707 of the 743 inhabitants were Swiss and 36 (= 4.8%) foreigners. The population consisted of 95.2% Swiss citizens. At the end of 2014, the foreign residents came from Serbia including Kosovo (41.7%), Germany (36.1%) and Spain (2.8%). 16.7% came from the rest of Europe and 2.8 % came from outside Europe.

history

Aerial photo (1954)

In connection with the collection of crusade taxes in 1275, the place is mentioned under the different names Towenswande and Togelswande . The community must be older, however, as the lords of Kapfenberg (a sideline of the barons of Wolhusen) were named in the land register of the St. Urban monastery in 1197 . Part of the community was sold to knight Johann von Aarwangen in 1329. The Kapfenburg , however, belonged to the Habsburgs . This was given to Humbel von Lichtenberg and his wife Adelheid von Wolhusen in 1368. Since the couple became citizens of the city of Lucerne in 1385, the castle escaped destruction after the defeat of the Habsburgs against the Confederates in the battle of Sempach in 1386. In 1488, the church was desecrated during tumults. The Kapfenburg fell apart and the remains of its ruins have disappeared. The rule of Lucerne was often only of a theoretical nature, since the defensive Entlebuchers obtained a lot of freedom. Since 1803 the community has belonged to the newly created Entlebuch office.

The village church of St. Nikolaus , which was built by Wilhelm Keller between 1860 and 1864 in neo-Gothic style. There is a richly painted high altar and two side altars (St. Fridolin on the left, St. Nicholas on the right). Also worth seeing is the Brunegg Chapel, built in 1809 above the Oberhüsern district with a Gothic Pietà from 1530.

tourism

Doppleschwand is part of the Napf hiking area on the one hand and the Entlebuch UNESCO biosphere reserve on the other. However, tourism is currently not a big employer.

schools

In the community there is a kindergarten attended by 19 children (school year 2003/2004) and a primary school at which 76 pupils are taught. From the 7th grade onwards, the young people attend classes in Entlebuch.

traffic

From 1934 to 1999 there was a Doppleschwand-Romoos stop on the Bern - Lucerne railway line, which passes east of the municipality. However, this was far from both of the communities mentioned.

Since road connections were set up between 1839 and 1841, Doppleschwand was accessible by road. Due to the limited space, stagecoaches drove until 1926. Since then, Postbuses have been running on the Wolhusen - Doppleschwand - Romoos line. The closest motorway connections in Emmen and Dagmersellen are 26 and 27 km away.
