Schwanden bei Brienz (officially called Schwanden until 1911 ) is a political municipality in the Interlaken-Oberhasli administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .

Surname

Schwanden is a clearing name that was transferred to the settlement. The name goes back to the Swiss German Schwand- (Hau, Kahlschlag, clearing). The addition "near Brienz" was introduced in 1911 to better distinguish between towns of the same name, such as B. Schwanden GL . First historical mention in documents, 1524, with the Leyenn zendenn zu Schwanden .

Schwanden bei Brienz is located in the Bernese Oberland south of the Brienzer Rothorn . The neighboring communities starting from the north in a clockwise direction are Giswil , Hofstetten bei Brienz , Brienz and Flühli . The Brienzer Rothorn forms the natural border between the Bernese Oberland and Central Switzerland .

The village consists of the geographically slightly offset parts of Oberschwanden , Unterschwanden and Glyssen .

The three wild brooks Glyssibach, Schwanderbach and Lammbach flow through the village and shortly afterwards flow into Lake Brienz . In the past, the torrents have often brought suffering and calamity over the village. In order to minimize the risk, extensive structures were created. The three torrents and the Brienzer Rothorn are symbolically represented in the coat of arms.
