Guttannen is a municipality in the Interlaken-Oberhasli administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .

history

Guttannen is a field name that became a place name. It is a short form of ze den guoten tannen (by the good firs). It was first mentioned in writing as Guotontannon in 1377 . In 1723 and 1803 two fires destroyed almost the entire village. Only a few houses survived this catastrophe. An avalanche on March 3, 1830 killed 5 men from the village, including Arnold Abbühl, who was there on the first ascent of the Finsteraarhorn on August 16, 1812.

On August 22, 2005 , a debris flow spilled the cantonal road and blocked the Aare , which then looked for a new route through the village and caused great damage in the Schattseite district.

geography

Guttannen is in the Bernese Oberland near the Grimsel Pass . The neighboring communities starting from the north in a clockwise direction are Innertkirchen , Obergoms , Goms , Fieschertal and Grindelwald .

With an area of 200.77 square kilometers, Guttannen is a huge mountain community by Swiss standards (eighth largest in Switzerland). The municipality is larger than the entire canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden . 90% of the area is barren land.

The Aare rises from the Guttannen glaciers . The water is used intensively to generate electricity, there are four lakes: the Oberaarsee , the Grimselsee , the Räterichsbodensee and the Gelmersee .

The Schreckhorn , Lauteraarhorn , Finsteraarhorn and Ritzlihorn are on the western border of the municipality .

The Finsteraar Glacier , the Lauteraar Glacier , the Unteraar Glacier , the Oberaar Glacier , the Grueben Glacier and the Bächli Glacier also belong to the community .

Natural hazards

Guttannen is threatened by various natural hazards. The village is threatened by avalanches in winter and debris flow activity has increased significantly for several years .

Avalanches

In the avalanche winter of 1999 , Guttannen was cut off from the environment for weeks because the road was closed due to the acute danger of avalanches .

Debris flows

For the debris flow of August 22, 2005 see above .

From 2009 to 2011, several large debris flow events in the Spreitgraben mobilized a considerable load of bed load and transported it into the Aare.

politics

The community president is Hans Abplanalp-Imbaumgarten (as of 2016). Guttannen is a community of residents without a civic community . There is also an Evangelical Reformed parish . There are two farming communities in Guttannen (Boden & Guttannen).
