Oberaar Glacier
The Oberaar Glacier is a valley glacier in the eastern part of the Bernese Alps , in the canton of Bern in Switzerland . It has a length of almost 5 km, is on average 800 m wide and, together with the side ridges, covers an area of about 5 km².
The Oberaar glacier has its origin on the glacier pass of the Oberaarjoch ( 3216 m above sea level ) between the Oberaarhorn and the Oberaarrothorn ( 3463 m above sea level ). It then flows to the east, flanked by the Scheuchzerhorn ( 3456 m above sea level ) in the north and the Aargrat (up to 3132 m above sea level ) in the south. The glacier tongue lies at 2310 m above sea level. M. at the far end of the Oberaar reservoir ; however, if it melts further in the future, the glacier will soon retreat from the reservoir. The flows from the reservoirOberaarbach , which shortly afterwards flows into the Grimselsee , also a reservoir.
The edge of the Unteraar glacier was 560 m lower in the 19th century and is still around 400 m lower than that of the Oberaar glacier today. Before the construction of the Grimselsee, the Oberaarbach flows into the Aare flowing out of it next to the edge of the Unteraar glacier.
At the Oberaarjoch, the transition from the Oberaar Glacier to the Studer Glacier, a branch of the Fiescher Glacier , stands at 3256 m above sea level. M. the Oberaarjochhütte of the Swiss Alpine Club SAC. It is an important stage on the high alpine glacier route from the Lötschental or Jungfraujoch to the Grimsel Pass region .
