About this picture
w

Oberried am Brienzersee is a municipality in the Interlaken-Oberhasli administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland . Oberried is a mixed municipality and consists of the two localities Oberried and Ebligen.

Place name

The name Ried can be interpreted in two ways: from the Old High German riod, reoth (clearing) or from the Swiss German Ried (land overgrown with reeds and marsh grass). For Niederried and Oberried on Lake Brienz, however, it should be noted that these villages are located on the steep, sunny and dry slope of the Riedergrat. High up on the Harder, Rieder and Brienzergrat there are also several corridors called Ried : Ried in the Ringgenberger Berg, Rieden on a slope north above Niederried, Rieden on a slope above the village of Oberried and Gäldried , a station on the Rothornbahn. These reeds certainly cannot be associated with reeds, but rather with riod, reaoth clearing. This clearly indicates the meaning of Ried used on Lake Brienz . With this, Niederried am Brienzersee was most likely founded by the Alemanni in a lower forest clearing and Oberried am Brienzersee in an upper forest clearing. Given the many dry corridors on Lake Brienz villages that are suitable for building houses, it probably never occurred to the settlers to name their village communities after the extremely rare flat and therefore marshy and useless Mosers.

Oberried was first mentioned in a document on April 15, 1303. In a dispute between the Lords of Ringgenberg and the Capuchins over Wald between Iseltwald and Bönigen, the witnesses and free farmers were among others : Rudolf called Johner von Obirnriet and Cunrad called Risser von Obirnriet mentioned.

geography

Oberried am Brienzersee is located in the Bernese Oberland on the north shore of Lake Brienz . The neighboring communities starting from the north in a clockwise direction are Flühli , Brienz , Niederried near Interlaken and Habkern . The highest mountain is the Tannhorn ( 2221  m above sea level )

history

In 1914, the previously independent municipality of Ebligen was merged with Oberried.

The Hans Hamberger fireworks factory existed in Oberried from 1863 to 2013 . In 1941 and 1959 there were serious accidents with many deaths. On July 30, 1959 at 9:35 a.m., 10 employees were killed in a large explosion. Since this tragic accident, work has only been carried out in small, separate buildings. Nevertheless, there was another accident on September 4, 2013. During clean-up work in connection with the move to Nitrochemie Wimmis AG in Spiez , two people were killed in an explosion. Since 2017, the Florens Resort & Suites holiday complex has been under construction on the 64,000 square meter former company site directly on Lake Brienz. The first stage with 71 apartments should be completed by December 2019. A further 84 apartments are to be built in a second and third construction phase.

Avalanches

The bridge on the cantonal road at Hirscherengraben towards Brienz is constructed from logs so that they can be carried out into Lake Brienz in the event of an avalanche , for example on January 22, 2018. In some winters, the bridge was destroyed several times by avalanches. The avalanches break on the Brienzergrat at almost 2000  m above sea level. M. and can go up to Lake Brienz at 564  m above sea level. M. , the horizontal distance between Brienzergrat and Lake Brienz is only 2300 meters.

traffic

Oberried from the lake

Oberried can be reached by train ( Zentralbahn ), car and ship. In winter it happened that the railway line and the cantonal road had to be closed due to avalanches or threats. In these cases the ships, which otherwise only operate in summer, exceptionally also sailed in winter.
