history
In the seventh century AD, the Alemanni settled for the first time in today's municipal area and displaced the Celts who were already present in the surrounding valleys. The first written mention of the place, as inter lacus Madon, was on November 8, 1133 in an umbrella letter from the German Emperor Lothar III. It is known that many Mattner signed up as mercenaries in foreign services.
The Unspunnen Festival , which was held for the first time in 1805, can be seen as a milestone in the history of this town . Matten also benefited from tourism in the Bernese Oberland , which emerged in the 19th century , and this is how the Grandhotels Jungfraublick (1863) and Mattenhof (1870) were created. The latter served as a military hospital during World War II.
During the Second World War , a military airfield was built on the municipality with the Interlaken airfield . For this purpose, a large piece of land in the southeast of the municipality was drained . Today this area no longer has any military significance. The large areas are mainly used for livestock farming. There are also an increasing number of large events taking place in this flat territory. The Country and Trucker Festival or the Greenfield Festival are worth mentioning . The Mystery Park ( JungfrauPark since 2010 ) was also built on the area of the airfield .

economy
As the communities of Unterseen , Interlaken and Matten grow together, the communities are also closely linked economically. The tourism plays an important role in the communities. The Balmers hostel , which is well known by backpackers, is located in Matten . The Tell open-air theater on Mattener Boden attracts thousands of tourists in summer. With the Mystery Park , another tourist attraction was created on Mattener Boden.
With the closure of the military airfield, the municipality of Matten, but also the entire Bödeli, lost valuable jobs. Although the village image is still dominated by agriculture today, only 4% of the working population is engaged in agriculture.
