Until December 31, 2013, Gadmen was a political municipality in the Interlaken-Oberhasli administrative district and the easternmost municipality in the canton of Bern in Switzerland . On January 1, 2014, Gadmen merged with Innertkirchen .
history
The name Gadmen is derived from the Old High German gadum (stable, barn, small house) and is first mentioned historically in 1382 as the buw imm Gadmen .
geography
Gadmen is located in the Gadmertal in the Bernese Oberland on the driveway to the Susten Pass , the pass of which lies on the eastern border of the municipality and canton. The hot river in the valley is called Gadmerwasser . The neighboring communities from the north clockwise were until December 31, 2013 Engelberg in the canton of Obwalden, Wassen and Göschenen in the canton of Uri, Obergoms in the Valais, and the Bernese communities Guttannen and Innertkirchen .
There are three glaciers in the Gadmer area, the Steingletscher , the Triftgletscher and the Wendengletscher . The Steinsee lies below the Steingletscher. The most famous mountain in Gadmen is the Titlis , the steep southern flank of which gives no indication of the glacier that the mountain carries on the north side.
Two thirds of the total area of Gadmen are glaciers, firne and rocks.
