The FFH area Schwarzes Wasser (identification DE-4305-304) is around 100 hectares and is located in the urban areas of Wesel and Hamminkeln in the Wesel district in North Rhine-Westphalia . As an FFH area, it forms part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas . It is located within the much larger nature reserve Diersfordter Wald . Even before the FFH designation, since 1936, the area was under protection as NSG Schwarzes Wasser ; this went up in 2009 in the NSG Diersfordter Wald.

The area is named after the heather pond of the same name in Wesel, which is located in the northern part of the area. The term "black water" is said to go back to the often brown-black color of the water. Presumably, it is an outflow-free blow-out basin that was created in the post-ice age and later filled with nutrient-poor water. The extension is about 400 m × 120 m with a depth of up to 140 cm. The water surface is around 2.5 hectares.

The pond is surrounded on all sides by pine forests and partly also oak birch forests, which are often several meters high dunes. Heathland and transitional moors also occur. The pond used to contain numerous botanical treasures, including the water lobelia ( Lobelia dortmanna ). Their occurrence has been extinct for years. The occurrence of the frog herb ( Luronium natans ) is remarkable . Lost for years, it has settled again after maintenance measures.

In the past, the area was badly affected by the numerous visitors (unauthorized bathing, step damage in the moor area). Since the 1990s, however, visitor guidance measures have led to a considerable improvement in the situation. A 2.6 km long nature trail with information boards leads around the pond.
