Life

Edwin Nil was the son of pastor Rudolf Ludwig Nil and his wife Nanette (née Schachtler).

He enrolled at the University of Bern and subsequently studied theology at the universities of Heidelberg , Berlin , Jena and Halle ; His fellow students also included the later painter Albert Anker and the pastor Eduard Langhans , with whom he argued in the guide dispute in 1866.

In 1862 he became pastor in Huttwil until he became pastor in Kirchberg in 1867.

He was a member of the Bernese Church Synod and the Synodal Council.

Edwin Nil was married to Rosalie (née Geist) for the first time in 1863 and to Louise Pauline, daughter of the pastor Johannes Walther (1811–1879), for a second marriage from 1876. He had several children with his second wife:

  • Bertha Nil, later ran a pension;
  • Walter Nil-Guyer, became pastor in Trub ;
  • Ella Nil married the Greenland explorer Alfred de Quervain ;
  • Rösli Nil became a teacher at the Zurlinden School in Bern ;
  • Eugen Nil-Elsässer, engineer in Meiringen .

Spiritual and literary work

In the apostolic dispute Edwin Nil acted as mediator and is considered to be a co-founder of the inner-church group Mitte and its magazine Volksblatt: Mitteilungen aus Kirche und Schule (1869–1771). He also played a key role in the beginnings of saemann magazine .

In the guideline dispute over the work The Holy Scriptures published by Eduard Langhans , Edwin Nil called for reconciliation with his publication Waffen zur Rechten und zur Linken in 1866.

On behalf of the Synodal Council, he wrote an accountability report on the ecclesiastical situation from 1886 to 1890. In the report he commented on the free churches and sects that were prevented from penetrating through various church initiatives. These initiatives included additional services in school houses and remote villages, Bible studies during the week, lectures on church history and social issues, mission festivals, district festivals, church and religious magazines, and last but not least the new church hymn book. Religious life is described in all its regional church diversity, but it also describes poverty and the unresolved social question .
