The name of the village comes from the church on the Kirchhoger , a hill near Höchfeld, which has existed since the early Middle Ages . The current church dates from 1506.

The village is first mentioned in a document in 994. At that time the village belonged to the Seltz monastery in Alsace . In 1481 Kirchberg was bought by the city of Bern. In Helvetic , the land was then given away to the legal owners, and the shared forests and commons went into private ownership. As early as the 18th century, factories were operating in Kirchberg that produced for export.

population

The population has more than tripled since the beginning of the 20th century. On December 31, 2016, the municipality had 5,914 inhabitants (January 1, 2001: 5,326, December 31, 2005: 5,526, December 31, 2006: 5,614).

Since 2001, a bypass road has relieved the community of feeder traffic to the Kirchberg motorway junction. At the beginning of 2001 there were 19,800 vehicles per day, after the opening there are still 10,700 vehicles driving through the center of Kirchberg. The bypass leads over a new Emme bridge.

In 2005 the triple gym "Grossmatt" was completed, in which international games of national teams in the sports of handball and floorball have been played since the opening . In 2007, the Swiss elite table tennis championships and the U-19 floorball world championships took place here. On the final day of the games for 3rd place Switzerland - Finland and the subsequent Czech Republic - Sweden final, the hall was sold out with 1,300 spectators.
