The place name goes back to the personal name Romanus , a name often used by the Alemanni, and therefore means for the people of Romanus .

Rumendingen, which initially belonged to the Kingdom of Hochburgund, was later owned by the Zähringers and, since the 13th century, by the Count of Kyburg . Together with Grasswil, the village came to the city of Burgdorf in 1395. Since the beginning of the 15th century, Bern had sovereignty over the area. Rumendingen was assigned to the Landvogtei Wangen and the Koppigen court district. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village belonged to the district of Wangen during the Helvetic Republic and from 1803 to the Oberamt Burgdorf, which received the status of an administrative district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831.
