The Weissenstein Pass lies north of Solothurn and leads over the Weissenstein , the local mountain of the Solothurn people.

geography

The pass leads from the southern Oberdorf ( Canton Solothurn ) to the Gänsbrunnen, which is only around 12 kilometers away, and thus also forms an entrance into the Swiss Jura .

The pass is at 1261  m above sea level. M. and consists only of a narrow ridge with a tight curve. To the south, just below the top of the pass, there is a small rest area and the Hotel Kurhaus Weissenstein ( 1284  m above sea level ). The highest point of the Weissenstein is the Röti east of the pass crossing at 1395.2  m above sea level. M.

traffic

The pass road has a gradient of up to 22% (average: 9.5%). This makes the Weissenstein one of the steepest passes in Switzerland . The pass road is not very busy and is closed in winter from November to March.

It is an asphalt road with no lane markings, some of which are so narrow that two cars cannot meet. Dodges are available. The south side in particular has numerous narrow curves, some of which are spectacularly carved into the rock.

Since the new gondola lift from Oberdorf went into operation , the pass road has been completely closed on Sundays and cantonal holidays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Toboggan run

There is no winter service on the pass road. For this reason and because of the enormous gradient of the road, the pass road serves as a nationally popular toboggan run in winter. Since the north side is practically always in the shade, you can toboggan much longer on this side. The pass road is completely closed to traffic during this time.
