The Grosse Scheidegg is the pass that connects Grindelwald in the valley of the Black Lütschine with Meiringen in the Haslital ( Aare ). The pass is at 1962 m above sea level. M. below the Wetterhorn . On the north side the ridge rises to the Schwarzhorn .

On the Grindelwald side, the Scheidegg forms the end of the wide valley basin. The view of the valley and the surrounding rock faces of the Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn and Eiger is impressive. On the northern side, the top of the pass can only be reached through the narrow Reichenbachtal .

Since 1979 there has been a continuous road connection across the Grosse Scheidegg. There is regular traffic with the GrindelwaldBus between the Schwarzwaldalp (accessible from Meiringen by PostBus) and the Upper Grindelwald Glacier . Private car traffic is only permitted for residents and hotel guests with a permit. This makes the Grosse Scheidegg a popular destination for cyclists . In 1996 , the Tour de Suisse ran over the Grosse Scheidegg for the first time.

At the top of the pass there is a hotel of the same name for day trippers and hikers. In winter, sleigh rides are sometimes offered from the Grosse Scheidegg to the Schwarzwaldalp .

In contrast to the Kleine Scheidegg , the Grosse Scheidegg is less high (99 meters lower), less well developed and less visited. The capitalization in the name probably refers to the greater meaning: the transition to the Haslital was more important in older times for the Grindelwald people compared to the pass to Wengen and the Lauterbrunnen valley , which was more easily accessible on other routes.
