The Klausen Pass (pass height at 1948  m above sea level ) is a pass crossing in the Swiss canton of Uri , which enables a connection from the core area of the canton via the valley area, which is continuously inhabited in winter and therefore functional exclave Urner Boden, into the Glarnische . The pass leads from Altdorf (canton Uri) through the Schächental over the pass summit and the parish of Urnerboden to Linthal in the canton of Glarus. At the top of the pass, the border runs between the Uri community of Unterschächen and the Uri soil, which belongs to Spiringen .

traffic

The officially designated Klausenstrasse is part of Hauptstrasse 17 , which crosses the Glarnerland , and bears this name from Linthal . It ends in a roundabout between Altdorf , Bürglen and Schattdorf . The pass road leads into Hauptstrasse 2 , Gotthardstrasse , to which the Axenstrasse belongs in the northwest .

The Klausenpass is closed in winter. In summer, a post bus line from the Central Switzerland regional center runs from Flüelen to Linthal.

history

Length profile of Klausenstrasse around 1900

As early as 1829, the desire arose for the first time to build a drivable road over the Klausen Pass between Glarus and Uri. Several attempts failed, however: in 1864 because the construction of the Gotthardstrasse had a higher priority for Uri, in 1873 because a subsidy application was rejected by the Federal Council. It was not until 1891 that the request was finally approved by the Federal Council. The federal government took on 80% of the construction costs of 2,135 million francs, the cantons Uri and Glarus paid for the rest. Construction began in the canton of Uri in 1893, and two years later in Glarus as well. On June 15, 1900, the route was officially inaugurated and the first stagecoach was able to drive it.

The Flüelen - Klausen - Linthal line was operated by Jakob Bolliger and in the summer it went once a day in both directions. With five-horse Coupé-Landau and Coupé-Berline, which offered space for eight passengers, 1,916 passengers could be transported in the first year. The trip lasted a day and a half. We spent the night on the Urnerboden or in Urigen and the horses were changed. In the second year of operation, the number of courses was doubled and in 1906 the Altdorf - Flüelen line was added. The prices for a trip were initially 15.55 francs and were a little more than four times the daily wage of a worker. In 1913 3,713 travelers were transported over the Klausen Pass, in 1921 after the war only 2,146.

Postbus ride over the Klausen Pass around 1920

After the road was made drivable for cars, the route was also used by Postbuses for the first time in 1922 - initially only in summer, from 1927 also in winter. The age of the stagecoach was over. First the so-called Car alpin were used, but in 1928 they switched to all-weather vehicles. In the 1930s the road was finally tarred. The Second World War led to the temporary suspension of the Alpine courses over the Klausen Pass. In the post-war period, however, the number of courses increased and in 1955 the PTT introduced excursion tickets to the top of the pass for CHF 7. The Postbus courses were therefore increasingly used for leisure travel.

Motorsport

Between 1922 and 1934, a mountain race for cars and motorcycles, the Klausen race , was held on the Klausen Pass . In 1993, 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2013 further races with vintage vehicles took place. The Klausen Pass is considered challenging due to its route. In 2006 there was an inline race from the foot of the eastern pass up the mountain.

Infrastructure

At the top of the pass there is a chapel, a parking lot, a kiosk with a restaurant and a self-service restaurant. The Hotel Passhöhe is 100 meters below the pass in the direction of Altdorf .
