Baselstrasse
The Baselstrasse between Lucerne and Zofingen was the first street in the canton of Lucerne to be re-routed between 1758 and 1761 and expanded into a modern highway . 8,000 workers from all municipalities in the canton and 6,000 draft animals had to take part in the road construction.
Axenstrasse
Originally there was no road along Lake Uri . With the construction of Axenstrasse in the 1860s, the canton of Uri was no longer dependent on the sea route. Axenstrasse was opened to traffic on July 3, 1865. Since then, several galleries have been built to protect the road from falling rocks and landslides. In 2005 the 2.6 kilometer long Flüelertunnel was opened, which relieved Flüelen from traffic.
Gotthard Pass
The Gotthard Pass was expanded into a passable road from 1820 and has been passable by stagecoach since 1830 . In 1895 the first car drove over the Gotthard Pass. In 1953, the Gotthard Pass and the Schöllenenstrasse were fully expanded. In 1977 the construction of the completely new road was completely finished. The new road bypasses the old Tremola road in a large area and has even been converted into a car road on the south ramp.

According to the Federal Roads Office FEDRO, Axenstrasse is to be expanded further by 2025. The village of Sisikon is to be bypassed in a 4.4 kilometer tunnel . In addition, a 2.8 kilometer long tunnel is being built that will lead from Ingenbohl to Ort. This expansion should relieve Sisikon of through traffic and better protect the Axenstrasse from falling rocks and other natural forces.
