Merlischachen is a village in the political municipality of Küssnacht in the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland .

population

history

The name Merlischachen is said to be derived from the Latin merula ("blackbird") and the German Schachen (small forest) and means "blackbird forest".

The area on Lake Lucerne was first mentioned in 1168 when the knight Hermanno de Merlascachen appeared as a witness in a deed of donation. He lived in a tower that is still reminiscent of the Burg property. The meadows, forests and vineyards as well as the fishing rights belonged to the monasteries of Lucerne and Engelberg . With the expansion of the Swiss Confederation , the Schwyz took action : In 1440 they bought the rulership rights for 60 Rhenish gold guilders and united Merlischachen with Küssnacht. Around 1450, the wealthy Hans Schnider donated the first chapel , and in 1792 the chaplaincy was founded.
